Professional Credential

TRACE Methodology Practitioner

On completing the Academy for Pet Loss training course, practitioners receive the TRACE Methodology Practitioner certificate — a named, dated professional credential in pet bereavement counselling.

What the certification covers

Certification confirms that you have completed training in the five steps of the TRACE Method (Therapeutic Remembrance for Animal Companions and their Endings), have demonstrated understanding of the grief theory underpinning each step, and are equipped to practice as a specialist pet bereavement counsellor.

The curriculum covers:

  • Worden's Four Tasks of Mourning — the primary grief theory framework
  • Continuing Bonds Theory — why we don't ask people to let go
  • The five TRACE steps — each with video content, reflection exercises, and assessment
  • Complex cases — anticipatory grief, euthanasia decisions, different species (extended course)
  • Practice building — getting listed, generating referrals, introducing the memorial page tool

The digital badge

Every TRACE Methodology Practitioner receives a verifiable digital badge — an Open Badge 2.0 credential that can be:

  • Embedded on your website or practice page
  • Added to your LinkedIn profile
  • Verified by any third party — vets, employers, clients — by clicking the badge
  • Shared as a direct link

Digital badges are powered by Open CPD, a specialist platform for professional training verification. The badge contains metadata about the issuing organisation, the award criteria, and the date of issue — all verifiable by anyone who sees it.

How it is assessed

Each module ends with a quiz — five to eight multiple choice questions requiring 80% to pass. Retakes are allowed. The assessment is designed to be credible without being punishing — the goal is to ensure practitioners have genuinely engaged with the material, not to create unnecessary barriers.

The certification is awarded automatically on completing all module assessments. No manual marking. No waiting.

What the certification is not

The TRACE Methodology Practitioner is a specialist counselling certificate in pet bereavement. It is not a clinical psychology qualification, a psychotherapy licence, or a general counselling credential. Practitioners with no prior counselling training should be clear with clients about the nature of their practice and should not represent themselves as clinical therapists.

For practitioners who already hold a clinical qualification (BACP, CPCAB, NBCC, or similar), the TRACE certificate represents a specialist endorsement of their pet bereavement practice.
